Covenant
between First Baptist Church in Framingham and The Peniel Iglesia Bautista
in Santa Elena, El Salvador has been signed!
by Naomi Stanley, FBC Framingham
In 2001, an earthquake devastated El Salvador. A member of FBC-Framingham
had family in El Salvador and raised them up during the prayers of concern.
We agonized with her as she waited for news that her family was ok,
and finally received word that they were. As word came in, along with
pictures, FBC asked “What can we do to help?” Our answer,
“Let’s go to El Salvador and help them rebuild!”
International Ministries was contacted and the people of a small church
in Santa Elena became our mission. In 2002, 13 people left from Framingham
and flew to San Salvador where they met their translator and headed
for Santa Elena. They worked side by side with the people helping to
rebuild their home.
In 2004, a team of 8 went back to El Salvador to help with more building
and also to see if a covenant between the two churches was possible.
While part of the team worked on rebuilding walls another group met
to talk and to pray about a covenant between the two churches.
On Friday, April 14, 2006 a group from The First Baptist Church in Framingham
left for El Salvador. They planned to help with painting and more rebuilding;
but most importantly, to re-kindle their on-going relationship with
their brothers and sisters of Santa Elena. The congregation of FBC voted
to accept the covenant that was written; all that was left was for the
congregation in Santa Elena to accept it. On this trip, the team of
6, along with the Board of The Peniel Iglesia Bautista signed the covenant.
This covenant is not entirely about money, it is about people and our
relationship with each other and with God. We pray for each other and
we celebrate the bond that has brought us together; the bond of God’s
family.
